T he AIM Alliance consisted of three tech companies trying to compete against the Microsoft Windows-Intel duo (known as WinTel at the time). Apple, IBM, and Motorola joined forces to collaborate and invest in a new computing platform. This effort yielded the Power Macintosh line. Wikipedia has a good writeup of the AIM Alliance and Power Mac series.

The headlines Rivals IBM, Apple team up for open platform and Allies look to recapture old dominance are interesting in retrospect, 30 years later. IBM is well past its prime, but Apple is more dominant than ever.
